Basis weight

mass per unit area, syn. grammage

In imperial units, the basis weight is measured in pounds per ream. A ream is 500 sheets of paper, cut to the basic size for a particular grade of paper, e.g. 25" x 38" for book paper. If a ream weighs 65 pounds, then the basis weight is 65 pounds.

In metric units, basis weight is measured in grams per square meter.
