Rod mill

A rod mill uses steel rods to grind material.  Jostling action induced by a rotating drum causes attrition of ore pieces against the steel.

Rod charge ranges from 35 to 65% of mill volume. These rods usually run the full length of the mill. Smaller diameter rods have a greater surface area to volume ratio and subsequently may provide greater grinding efficiency. Due to concerns of rod tangling, and rods working their way into discharge openings, rod mills typically operate at only 50 to 90% of the critical operating speeds of ball mill.
